Many state Departments of Transportation (DOT) publish live winter operations maps. These show where plows are working, when roads were last treated, and sometimes provide camera feeds and road surface status. Bookmark your state’s map before a storm.
Find Your State’s Winter Operations Map
Search for your state plus one of these phrases: “plow tracker”, “winter operations map”, “snow and ice”, or “511 road conditions”. Examples:
- Colorado: COtrip (511) shows road conditions, chain laws, and cameras.
- Minnesota: 511MN with plow cameras and treatment status.
- New York: 511NY shows cameras and closure info; NYS Thruway has separate ops.
- Washington: WSDOT map with pass reports and winter chain requirements.
- Virginia: 511Virginia with plow progress during major events.
How to Use These Maps
Layers to Enable
- Snowplow locations: See where crews are actively working.
- Last treatment time: Recently treated roads are usually safer but can re‑freeze.
- Road cameras: Visual confirmation of conditions.
- Chain restrictions/closures: Especially in mountain passes.
Limitations
- Coverage varies by state and may exclude local/county roads.
- GPS latency means plow dots can be a few minutes behind.
- “Bare and wet” can still re‑freeze quickly near 20°F and falling.
Traveler Tips
- Check treatment timing and camera shots at decision points (passes, bridges).
- Carry chains where required and know how to install them before you go.
- If cameras show compact snow/ice, reduce speed and increase following distance.
